This\u00a0is the\u00a0first post of a four-part series documenting our upgrade to D365 process,\u00a0particularly where\u00a0it\u00a0deviates\u00a0from the more commonly documented\u00a0process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-standard-approach\">The Standard&nbsp;Approach&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/dynamics365\/fin-ops-core\/dev-itpro\/migration-upgrade\/upgrade-overview-2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard&nbsp;approach<\/a>&nbsp;for an upgrade of&nbsp;Dynamics&nbsp;AX 2012&nbsp;R3&nbsp;to Dynamics&nbsp;365 involves two major steps:&nbsp;code upgrade and&nbsp;then a data upgrade.&nbsp;The code upgrade portion is very cumbersome, complex, and can be considered overwhelming.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The common approach looks very much like the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In LCS, perform a code upgrade analysis on your AX 2012 model store\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setup and configure Visual Studio in a DEV VM\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect Visual Studio to VSTS\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Configure your source control mappings\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull down the upgraded code to source control\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resolve conflicts\u00a0until you get a clean build\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform the data upgrade\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test,\u00a0rinse\u00a0and repeat\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGo live\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-envista-s-approach\">enVista&#8217;s&nbsp;Approach&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our approach&nbsp;begins in much the same way with&nbsp;one&nbsp;key&nbsp;difference; we ignore the upgraded code and DO NOT import into source control.&nbsp;We&nbsp;download the code upgrade package for reference but do not work with it directly within our solution.&nbsp;We then select enhancements to data schema and recreate them in Dynamics 365.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a focus of Minimum Viable Product (MVP),&nbsp;our goal is to facilitate the upgrade as quickly as we can. This allows our business users to test new functionality in Dynamics 365 using their familiar legacy data. We will not be blindly moving code forward without&nbsp;a clear business need,&nbsp;and we won\u2019t be wasting our time trying to resolve conflicts&nbsp;just to get a solution&nbsp;to build successfully.&nbsp;Instead, we start with a nearly native solution, populated with our data, that the business&nbsp;is able to&nbsp;work with and evaluate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach does place more responsibility on our&nbsp;business analysts&nbsp;and end-users.&nbsp;They&nbsp;are responsible for determining which legacy enhancements are required instead of a developer or automated tool. This approach also promotes increased ownership from the end-users&nbsp;by engaging them earlier than the last phase of the upgrade (acceptance testing).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next three blog posts, I will explain the following:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the data schema elements to be upgraded\u00a0and\u00a0created in Dynamics 365 to accept our 2012 data.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform the data upgrade.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate\u00a0the system,\u00a0with OUR data,\u00a0against 2012 and determine what\u00a0enhancements\u00a0need to be brought forward.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deep-expertise-in-dynamics-ax-and-d365\">Deep Expertise in Dynamics AX and D365<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog,\u202fwe have&nbsp;presented our approach for upgrading to Dynamics&nbsp;365 from AX 2012.
